Our Practices

It is our mission to improve the climate on campus so that individuals feel valued, protected and safe to express themselves without fear of reprisal. We serve as an advocacy group for those who feel marginalized and as a result, develop practices and procedures designed to promote equality. In order to affect these changes, GSEC seeks to reduce and eventually eliminate campus polices that prevent full self-expression at the College of Charleston.

In addition, we provide accessible information about and sponsorship for research into federal and state laws as well as campus policies that affect issues of diversity and equality. Through both faculty and student led research, GSEC examines existing policies on campus and encourages the creation of campus policies that increase equal treatment in order to ensure equality for all those associated with the College of Charleston. We encourage intellectual dialogues with the academic communities on campus who support research that advances the goals of the Gender and Sexuality Equity Center. GSEC seeks to monitor and disseminate information regarding new developments at the federal, state, and local level that affect equality and issues of gender, particularly in regard to the LGBTQ community. A core objective is to work collaboratively with College authorities to support the enforcement of Title IX policies which includes the prevention of harassment, discrimination, and which also demands education equity in safe spaces that respect individuality.
